علم الأحاديث النبوية بعد الكتاب العزيز أعظم العلوم قدراً، وأرقاها شرفاً وفخراً، إذ عليه مبنى قواعد أحكام الشريعة الإسلامية، وبه تظهر تفاصيل مجملات الآيات القرآنية، وكيف لا ومصدره ممن لا ينطق عن الهوى، إن هو إلا وحي يوحى؟! "فهو المفسر للكتاب وإنما نطق النبي لنا به عن ربه".
ولما قضت نتائج العقول وأدلة الشرع المنقولة أن سعادة الدارين منوطة بمتابعة هذا الرسول، وأن المحبة الحقيقية باقتفاء سبيله واجبه الحصول.. انتهضت همم أعلام العلماء والسادة الفضلاء إلى البحث عن آثاره: أقواله وأفعاله وإقراره، فحصلوا ذلك ضبطاً وحفظاً، وبلغوه إلى غيرهم مشافهة ونقلاً، وميزوا صحيحه من سقيمه، ومعوجه من مستقيمه، إلى أن انتهى ذلك إلى إمامي علماء الصحيح، المبرزين في علم التعديل والتجريح: أبي عبد الله محمد بن إسمايعل الجعفي البخاري، وابي الحسين مسلم بن الحجاج القشيري النيسابورين فجمعا كتابيهما على شرط الصحة، وبذلاً جهدهما في تصفيتهما من كل علة، فتم لهما المراد، وانعقد الإجماع على تلقيبهما باسم "الصحيحين" أو كاد.
غير أنه قد ظهر لكثير من أئمة النقل وجهابذة النقد أن لمسلم ولكتابه من المزية ما يوجب لهما أولوية، فقد حكى القاضي أبو الفضل عياض بن موسى الإجماع على إمامته وتقديمه، وصحة حديثه وتميزه، وثقته وقبول كتابه. وكان أبو زرعة وأبو حاتم يقدمانه في الحديث على مشايخ عصرهما. وقال أبو علي الحسين بن علي النيسابوري: ما تحت أديم السماء أصح من كتاب مسلم.
ولما كان هذا الكتاب بهذه الصفة، ومصنفه بهذه الحالة.. فقد اعتنى محمد الأمين بن عبد الله الهرري الشافعي على تعليق عليه شرحاً يفك مبانيه، ويحل معانيه، ويفسر غرائبه، ويبين أغراضه متناً وسنداً، ويشرح متابعته تابعاً ومتبوعاً، لفظاً ونحواً ومعنىً، ويبين موضع التراجم من الأحاديث، ويذكر التراجم للأحاديث التي لم يترجم لها، وحكمة ما يدخله في خلال الأسانيد من نحو: (يعني)، ومراجع الضمائر والإشارات في نحو قوله: (مثله) و(نحوه) و(معناه)، وفي قوله: (بهذا الإسناد) مما قد زلت فيه أقدام كثير من ضعفاء الطلبة، وغير ذلك من الفوائد التي انفرد بها عن سائر شروح السابقين مما يطول ذكره، ويصعب تعداده ونشره.
