قصة "قطار 4.50 من بادنغتون" تحمل بين طياتها أبسط أنواع الجرائم، وأعقدها تنفيذاً، فالشاهدة امرأة عجوز صرحت مراراً وتكراراً برؤيتها جريمة قتل تحدث في قطار الساعة 4.50 المتجه إلى بادنغتون. ولكن الشرطة لم تعر الأمر أهمية، مدعية أن الشاهدة امرأة ذات خيال وارف.
ولكن هل هي كذلك فعلاً؟ أم أن ما رأته هو حقيقة وواقع؟ ومن هي المرأة التي قتلت ومن هو القاتل؟ ولماذا؟ وماذا حدث لجثتها هل وجدت أم أن في الأمر سرّ؟ والسيدة الشاهدة تعرف بالطبع الشخص الوحيد الذي يمكنه تفسير ملابسات وواقع هذه القضية فمن هي المرأة المحققة التي لطالما لعبت دور المحقق في مثل هذه القضايا الغامضة؟
مرّ القطاران بمحاذاة بعضهما، وتباطأ أحد القطارين قليلاً قبل أن يتسارع من جديد. وفي تلك اللحظة الخاطفة التي تحاذت فيها نوافذ القطارين شاهدت إيلسبيث الجريمة. كان الرجل (الذي رأت ظهره) يضغط على عنق المرأة بكل قوته، ولم تلبث المرأة أن سقطت ميتة وقد احتقن وجهها. ثم ازدادت سرعة القطار ومضى مختفياً عن الأنظار.
ولكن مَن سيصدق هذه القصة غير الآنسة ماربل؟ وخاصة حين لم توجد أدلة، ولم يوجد شهود، ولم توجد جثة!
