يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تقديم رؤية تفصيلية محققة للبسطامي، عن طريق اقتراح جمع كتاباته الصوفية التي تتركز في مساحة كبيرة منها في النص الشطحي الذي انتشر في البيئة الصوفية الإسلامية في القرن الثالث الهجري، واهتم الكتاب بتقديم موقف ايتمولوجي عن مفهوم الشطح، وعرض خصائص هذا النص الذي يرتبط بمضاعفات اللغة الصوفية ونظمها وبنيتها، عن طريق فحص علاقة هذا المفهوم بمحددات فكرة التأويل التي أنتجت بشكل أو بآخر جانباً فعالاً من المعرفة الإسلامية، وكشفت عن تجليات البناء المعرفي للظاهرة الصوفية.
يقول أبو يزيد البسطامي عن نفسه: من أبو يزيد ومن يعرف أبا يزيد أبو يزيد يطلب أبا يزيد منذ أربعين سنة فما يجده؟. وظل الناس منذ القرن الثالث الهجري يبحثون عن أقوال أبي يزيد فوجدوا شيئاً منها هنا وشيئاً هناك وغاب عنهم الكثير من أقوال أبي يزيد مؤسس شطحات الصوفية
في هذا الكتاب المحقق نلتقي للمرة الأولى بالأعمال الكاملة للبسطامي، التي التبست واختلطت كثيراً مع الأعمال الأخرى للصوفية.
