هي الأرضُ موتٌ بعد موت. هي هلاك أينما امتدّت، واحدة في كلّ اتّجاه. لا تتغيّر إن تقلّبت البلاد أو تبدّل أهلها. هي الأرض نفسها، أينما تترام تبتلع أبناءها لحماً طريّاً، وتُبقي عليهم عظماً جفيفاً. وتمضي الحياة ننظر إلى الأرض نفكّر كيف تُولج الناس إليها، كيف تقضي عليهم رفاتاً هباء. نفكّر كيف الحال داخلها. ما يحلّ بأناسنا في جوفها، وعلى أيّ حال ينتهون. ننظر إليها نتمنّى لو أنّها تفتح باطنها تُخرج لنا ما فيها مرّة أخيرة. تخرجهم لنا أحياء كاملين، عظماً يكسوه لحم، ودماً… لو أنّها تُرجعهم. تُرجع ملامحهم إلى وجوههم. ننظر إليهم عندما تبهت صورهم في رؤوسنا، عندما ننسى. ننظر إليهم فنعيدهم إلينا، نُعيدهم أحياء زمناً قصيراً.
هي الأرض موت لا تُرجع الموتى. أرض تقضي على مَن في جوفها بلا كلال، وتقضي على مَن عليها حزناً وأسى.
