قيل فيه ما لم يُقل في غيره من القوّالين، في النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر، ولقّب "شيخ الكار" لتميّزه؛ ارتجل، غنّى، بارز، كتب، حاور من جايله، و"اكتسب شهرة في كلّ البلدان التي عرفت قول المعنّى اتّصف بسرعة الخاطر، ورخامة الصوت، وجمال الشكل، ما اهّله ليكون طليعة فرسان المنبر؛ لكنّه فضّل الابتعاد، والاهتمام بكتابة القصائد الطويلة ( بينها واحدة ألفيّة من 281 بيتاً)، وبالمراسلة التي أعطته "السيادة"، فأغناها بما نشر، و ترك، وما تناقلته الألسن من جيل الى جيل؛ بعد غيابه نشر "بعض" زجله في ديوان، صدر في طبعات ثلاث.

"يا أسمر كويت القلب في نار الغرام... وخلَّيت جسمي جلد من فوق العظام... لانت قلوب القاسيه والصخرلان... ما كان قلبك يوجعك وتقول حَرَام... لانت قلوب القاسيه والصخرلان... من نهيدي وكتر ما بصيّح آمان... لو كان قلبك من حديد حلّويلين... وتقول هذا معذبينه من زمان... وعدتني ووعد المحبة لأَيمتين... حل الوفا يا مهجتي والوقت حان... من قيد حبَّك حِلّ هالعبد الرهين... يكفيه ما تحمَّل لأجلك من هوان... نهدتي بتشيّب الطفل الجنين... وأنت ما تشفق عليّ يا فلان... إن كان قصدك للوفا عند الكفان... في وقتها ما يعود محتاج الكفن"...
