لم يكن الخالصى عالماً من علماء الدين المشاهير فحسب، بل كان مناضلاً ومجاهداً لا تلين له قناة، وكان حريصاً على وحدة العالم الإسلامى، وقد عمل من أجل هذا الهدف، وقضى حياته بين العراق وإيران؛ فحارب الفساد أينما وجد دون النظر إلى كون هذا البلد وطنه أم غير ذلك، فقد كان ينظر إلى الدول الإسلامية كلها على أنها وطن للمسلمين مهما كانت لغاتهم وأجناسهم وأعراقهم. ومن هنا يتصدى للظلم والجور أينما وجد ولم يخش فى الحق لومة لائم.
كان الخالصى خطيباً مفوهاً يستطيع أسر القلوب المستمعين إليه وفكرهم، وكان مقنعاً بأسلوبه الشيق وبلاغته المعهودة أينما حل وحيثما إتجه، وكانت جموع الناس تسير وراءه وتتبعه كلما دعاها للقيام بمظاهرة أو مسيرة، وتقتنع بفكره وحكمته عندما يخاطبها ويجه حديثها إليه. وكانت له مواقف عديده حارب فيها الفساد والبدع والخرافات التى انتشرت بين الناس، فكتب المقالات وألف الكتب. والعجيب فى الأمر أنه رغم معاناته الشديدة من القبض عليه والنفى إلا انه كان على إطلاع دائم وتعلم مستمر، ومن ينظر إلى مؤلفاته العديدة يدهش من هذا العدد الضخم من المؤلفات التى كتب بعضهاً أحياناً وهو فى السجن أو فى المنفى.
ولد آية الله الشيخ محمد الخالصى ابن آية الله الشيخ محمد مهدى الخالصى إبن الشيخ محمد حسين الكاظمى عام 1308هـ= 1890م في الكاظمين، والخالصى نسبة إلى مدينة خالص التى تقع بالقرب من العاصمة العراقية بغداد وهى جزء من محافظة ديالى، وهى مدينة قديمة جدًا. أما الكاظمين فهى مدينة صغيرة بجانب بغداد وكانت تعرف قديماً بمقابر قريش ودفن فيها بعد ذلك حضرة الإمام موسى الكاظم الإمام السابع عند الشيعة الإثنى عشرية وحضرة الإمام محمد التقى، واشتهرت باسم الكاظمين أو مشهد الكاظمين.
