تتلخص أحداث الرواية في وقوع جريمة قتل في برْكة سباحة يذهب ضحيتَها أكاديميّ مسنّ، يُدرّس مادة الحاسوب، كان يرفض قرار الدولة في استصدار بطاقة بيومتريَّة للمواطنين لاعتقاده أنها يمكن أن تشكل تهديداً أمنياً للناس. وفي محاولة منه لإثبات مقدرته على اختراق الموقع الإلكتروني لوزارة الدفاع، يكتشف سراً خطيراً يتلخص في "عملية شمشوم" التي يقررها الرئيس لقصف مفاعل لدولة في المنطقة.
ويحتفظ الأكاديمي بتفاصيل الخطة ويحتفظ بها قبل مقتله عند إحدى طالباته، التي تسلمها بدورها لصديقة من القدس تقرر هي الأخرى السفر إلى النمسا لتسليم الوثائق إلى الوكالة الدولية للطاقة الذرية. وتلتقي الفتاة التي تتعرض لمحاولة اغتيال، مع ابنة الأكاديمي، وتنجح في تنفيذ مهمتها تاركةً رئيس الوكالة يجري اتصالاته لإبطال العملية وإنقاذ العالم.
تقع الرواية بين الخيال والواقعية والرمزية والبوليسية والتجسس، وبما يشد القارئ منذ سطورها الأولى، فالرواية تتلمس تعقيدات الروائية "أجاثا كريستي" وتمويهاتها، وكذلك ألغاز "دان براون" وشيفراته، بل إنها تتقاطع في وقائعها مع سيرة بطل "شيفرة دافنشي" العالِمْ الذي قُتل على يد قوى شريرة بعد اكتشافه سرها، وساهمت ابنته في فضح مخططاتهم والحيلولة دون سيطرة تلك القوى على العالم.
