يتناول هذا الكتاب- في جزءيه الأول والثاني- تاريخ أوروبا منذ عصر النهضة حتى إبرام معاهدة وستفاليا سنة 1648. وقد حفلت هذه الفترة بأحداث جسام بدأت بصور شتى وضيئة من إشراقات النهضة التي أطلت على معظم دول أوروبا الغربية منذ القرن الرابع عشر, وحررت الفكر الإنساني من قيود الكنيسة ومن الجمود الذي ران على الحياة العامة في أوروبا, وأخذت المخترعات الحديثة يتوالى ظهورها بعضها في إثر بعض نتيجة تمتع الفرد بشخصية مستقلة, له حرية الرأي والتصرف والبحث. وقد أوضحنا أثر الحضارة الإسلامية في قيام هذه النهضة الأوروبية, كما شرحنا كيف واكب النهضة تدهور خلقي تمثل في استخفاف بالآداب العامة وإقبال محموم على حياة المجون والتبذل وانغماس في الملذات الجنسية حتى أصيب المجتمع الأوروبي بعامة والإيطالي بخاصة بما يمكن أن نطلق عليه في هذه الدراسة حمى الجنس. وقد ألحقنا بموضوع النهضة دراسة عن ثلاثة من أعلام الفكر الأوروبي الحديث في مطلع عصر النهضة, وأفردنا لهم فصلاً مستقلاً وهم دانتى, ميكيافيلى, توماس مور.
