قال رب العزة سبحانه وتعالى: "لقد كان في قصصهم عبرة لأولي الألبب" فبين الله تعالى أن كل الأخبار والحوادث التي قصها على نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم من أنباء الرسل المتقدمين من أممهم، وكيف جرى لهم من المحاجات والخصومات وما احتملته الأنبياء من التكذيب والأذى، وكيف نصر الله المؤمنين وخذل أعداءه الكافرين، كل هذا مما يثبت فؤادك يا محمد ليكون لك بأخبار من مضى من إخوانك المرسلين الأسوة، لأن في تاريخ الغابرين قصص حق ونبأ صدق وموعظة يرتدع بها الكافرون وذكرى يتذكر ويعتبر بها المؤمنون ومن هنا اتجه الحافظ "أبو الفداء عماد الدين إسماعيل بن عمر بن كثير القرشي الدمشقي" الذي اشتهر بالضبط والتحرير، وانتهت إليه رياسة العلم في التاريخ والحديث والتفسير، اتجه إلى جمع الأخبار، ومعرفة الأماكن والأحوال بعيداً عن الخرافات والأساطير والأوهام، فصنف كتابه الموسوعي في التاريخ وسماه (البداية والنهاية) فظهرت براعته في بحثه وتدوينه للتاريخ، وإبداعه حيث سلاسة التعبير وجمال الأسلوب وتكامل البحث حتى بز أقرانه، وتفوق على سابقيه ومعاصريه.
وبالنظر لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد اعتنى بإعادة طباعة بأسلوب يفكك أجزاءه وموضوعاته وذلك لتسهيل مطالعتها على القراء. وبين يدينا إعادة للجزء المتعلق بصفة الجنة وصفة النار، من الكتاب الأصل "البداية والنهاية" والذي اعتمد فيه المؤلف على النص من الكتاب والسنة في بسط الحوادث السالفة.
وبالعودة لعمل المحقق نجده قد تركز على ما يلي: أولاً: تصحيح متن الكتاب وضبطه على أدق النسخ وأصحها. ثانياً: شرح غريبه. ثالثاً: تخريج الآيات القرآنية. رابعاً: تخريج كثير من الأحاديث. خامساً: ضبط ما وقع في بعض الأسانيد في تحريف. سادساً: التعريف بأهم الأعلام.
