عنى العرب بعلم التاريخ في جملة ما عنوا به من علوم-وعلم التاريخ علم جليل نافع يقف المطالع له على أحوال الأمم البلدان السابقة ويستنبط من ذلك الدروس والعبر والعظات وتاريخ ثغر عدن وتراجم علمائها صنفه المؤرخ الباحث عبد الله الطيب بن عبد الله بن أحمد بامخرمة. المتوفي سنة 947هـ، وهو من مؤرخي عدن وفقهائها له مشاركة في بعض العلوم وقد جعل كتابه في قسمين القسم الأول في ذكر شيء مما جاء في عدن من الآيات والأحاديث والآثار وغير ذلك من ذكرها وذكر سورها ومشهور دررها.
والقسم الثاني في ذكر تراجم من نشأ بها أو وردها من العلماء والصلحاء والملوك والأمراء والتجار والوزراء. وقد رتب القسم الثاني على حروف المعجم ليسهل على الباحث عملية البحث يذكر أن الأخبار الواردة في عدن أكثر من أن تعد وقد جاء في الحديث الصحيح الذي أورده صاحب هذا الكتاب أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال في اشتراط الساعة: "وآخر ذلك نار تخرج من اليمن تطرد الناس إلى محشوهم" وفي رواية "نار تخرج من قعره عدن" قال المازري سميت عدناً من العدن وهو الإقامة لأن تبعاً كان يحبس فيها أصحاب الجرائم وهذه النار الخارجة من مقر عدن واليمن هي الحاشرة للناس.
