أثار قيام جمهورية إيران الإسلامية سنة 1979 قلقاً كبيراً في العالم الغربي الذي تساءل: ألن تؤدي الارادة التي أعلنها النظام الجديد عن تصديره الثورة إلى المنطقة، إلى اضطراب منطقةٍ أساسية بالنسبة إلى حاجات الاقتصاد العالمية النقطية؟ وبعد هجمات 11 أيلول/ سبتمبر 2001، زاد المنعطف الذي اتخذته السياسة الاميركية أيضاً من أهمية إيران الاستراتيجية، التي وصفها جورج و.بوش بأنها تنتمي إلى "محور الشر"، خصوصاً منذ استئناف طهران برنامجها للتطور النووي.
غير أنّ أهمية ايران الاستراتيجية لا يعادلها سوى جَهْل هذا البلد. ماذا كانت تداعيات الثورة الحقيقية سياسياً ودينياً واجتماعياً؟ كيف تحوّل المجتمع؟ إلى أي حدّ يمكن وصف النظام بأنّه إسلامي؟ ما هي سُبل التطور السياسي المتاحة؟
إنّ هذا الكتاب الموثّق جداً، إذ يجيب عن هذه التساؤلات، إنما يقدّم فهماً دقيقاً لايران اليوم. يبيّن تييرّي كوفيل بنحوِ خاصِ أنّ هذا البلد تتخلله تناقضات شديدة: فالمجتمع الخاضع لضغط قوي من النظام، سار في طريق التحديث المحتوم بلا شك؛ وتعاظمُ المطالب الديمقراطية تناغمَ مع التوطد المتصاعد لقضايا النساء والشباب. هكذا، شهدت ايران شكلاً من "ثورة خفية" من الصعب استشراف مآلها.
