هذه طبعة موسعة لعمل الكاتب السابق "الموثوق والمستبد في الأحاديث الإسلامية" دراسة حالة معاصرة، بداية بدراسة حالة لاعب كرة السلة المسلم الذي رفض الوقوف للنشيد الأمريكي، ووثائق أخرى محطمة للتقليد الفقهي الإسلامي، وظهور الاستبداد بالرأي في الأحاديث المسلمة المعاصرة، يحلل الكاتب ظهور ما سماه الاتجاهات المتزمنة والاستبدادية في الإسلام الحديث ويشدد على أن هذه الاتجاهات تسئ لثراء وتنوع الحديث الإسلامي، عبر إظهار أنفسهم على أنهم جنود الله الحقيقيون والمدافعون عن الديانة، يقوم المتزمتون بالتقليل من شأن المرأة، يمحون التفكير النقدي، ويفرغون الإسلام من محتواه الأخلاقي، يناقش الكاتب بالقول أن من يدعون أنهم حامو الإسلام هم نفسهم الذيت يضطهدون الرسالة الإسلامية، يدخل الكاتب في التقليد الفقهي الثري ويسعى إلى حماية الموثوقية للنص الديني من دون التحول إلى المناهج الاستبدادية في التفسير، وفي النهاية، يشدد على تبني مناهج تحليلية دقيقة في التفسير، ولإعادة التحقيق في المكانة الأخلاقية في الإسلام الحديث.
