لم تكن ثورة يوليو مجرد حدث عابر في تاريخ الشعب المصري بل كانت نقطة تحول فاصلة في مسيرة هذا الشعب وتاريخه المجيد وقد جرى جدال كبير بشأن التسمية الصحيحة لما حدث في 23 يوليو 1952 فالبعض بمن فيهم قادة الثورة سموا في بادئ الأمر ما وقع بأنه حركة قام بها الجيش والبعض الآخر ومنهم عبد اللطيف البغدادي عضو مجلس قيادة الثورة في مذكراته سموا ما جرى بأنه انقلاب عسكري وفريق ثالث أكيد أن ما جرى كان ثورة حقيقة بلا أي قدر من الشك أو الارتياب وهذا الجدال راجع إلى عدم التفرقة بطريقة علمية ما بين الانقلاب العسكري وبين الثورة فإن كل ثورة في التاريخ لا بد أن تبأا بانقلاب عسكري أو بانتفاضة شعبية وفي النهاية هي بلا شك نقطة تحول فاصلة في تاريخ مصر الحديث فهي لم تحرر شعب مصر فحسب بل انطلقت دعوتها التحررية في كل آفاق الأمة العربية والعالم الثالث.
