"الطريق إلى الملح" هي حديث الذاكرة، ذاكرة عبد الكريم العامري، وهو يعود بقلمه إلى درب الطفولة، حيث عاش وقومه في منطقة (حوز الجبلية) في العراق مع صديق عمره أحمد الصالح الذي يقحمه في هذا العمل، بقوة، وهو ما يزال يبحث عنه في فضاء مدينة الغاو العراقية الحبيبة على قلبه.
في البداية يذهب العامري بفكره إلى عالم الأرواح التي لا زالت تحلف في فضاء مدينة الفاو، والتي كانت أرضها مسرحاً للقتال، فيعيش مع الشخوص مخاض الموت، وينقل للقارئ ما مر من مآسي مع الشخوص مخاض الموت، وينقل للقارئ ما مر بهم من مآسي وتشرد وآلام، حتى أنه يصف النخيل الشامخة بقاماتها وقد تقطعت رؤوسها من بشاعة الحرب. بعد ذلك يقحم الروائي ذاكرته بالتحدث عن صاحبه أحمد الصالح وما مر به من أحداث وقصص ختى التحاقه بالخدمة العسكرية وترفعه فيها ثم اختفاءه عنه وابتعاده لأيام وشهور وهو الذي كان لا يفارقه أبداً، حتى بدأت الحرب وتناثر أهل المدينة بالهجرة إلى مدن أخرى، فافترق الجميع وهو لا يزال يبحث عن صاحبه الذي أحبه وأفنى عمره بحفظ ذكرياته في صندوقه الحديدي، يتلو آيات الحب الدفين على الأصوات المنطلقة من كل مكان، حتى ارتطم سمعه ذات يوم بنداء أحد الأمهات وهي تنادي ولدها الصغير باسم أحمد الصالح...
