إن لكثير من عظماء الرجال وقادة الأجيال، وصانعي التاريخ، ومُثْري الآداب والعلوم وفضائل الأعمال، ديوناً وحقوقاً على الشعوب والأمم والمجتمعات التي تجلُّهم وتتغنَّى بأمجادهم وبطولاتهم وعبقرياتهم، وقد تتفانى وتغلو في حبِّهم وتفضيلهم، يتأخر أداؤها وإيفاؤها، وقد تطول هذه المدة فتبلغ إلى قرون وتمتد إلى أجيال، وقد تقصر فتصل إلى عقود من السنين وفترات تاريخية محدودة.
وهي حكاية كثير من الأمم والعهود، وطبقات مختلفة من حَمَلَةِ راية الإصلاح، والداعين إلى سبيل الرشاد والإصلاح، ومنقذي الأمم ومحرر البلاد، والمبدعين لصنوف العلم والأدب والحكمة.
بقي ذكرهم مطموراً في ركام التاريخ، وأسمهم مغموراً في قائمة الأسماء اللامة - لأسباب خاصة - وأحاطت بهم هالات من الأساطير والمبالغات والتفاصيل الجانبية التي لا تلقي ضوءاً على شخصيتهم المميزة، ولا تحدد مكانتهم في التاريخ.
وقد تحول بينهم وبين فهمهم الصحيح والإنصاف لهم خلافاتٌ مذهبية، وحوادث تاريخية، ومصالح سياسية، ونقولٌ تقليدية، فتحجبهم عن الأنظار، أو تجعلهم ملكاً لطائفة خاصة أو فرقة معينة، ويعتبر الخروج من هذا السور العالي والإعتراف بالفصل والنظر إليهم كثروة مشاعة للبشرية - أو لديانة خاصة على الأقل - وهِبة إلهية ومعجزة من معجزات الرسول الأعظم، ودليل على صدق الإسلام وقدرة إنجابه للعظماء وأهل الكمال، إنحرافاً عن الدائرة التقليدية، وشذوذاً مذهبياً يتحاشاه المتديّن المتحمّس.
وقد تعرّض في آخر الكتاب - مضطراً ومحتسباً - لنقد بعض العقائد والنظريات التي استخدم فيها أصحابها إنتصارهم لأهل البيت وذرية سيدنا علي، وهي دخيلة على الإسلام منبثقة من الفلسفات العجمية والشعوبية والإقليمية، ومن رواسب الحضارات والنظم الدينية القديمة، والإسلام بريء منها.
ولقد جاء الكتاب إستعراضاً تاريخياً طويل المدى واسع الأرجاء، ومساهمة متواضعة في عرض سيرة رجل كبير من كبار الجيل الإنساني، وخريجي مدرسة النبوّة المنجِبة.
