يحتوي هذا الكتاب والذي هو واحد من سلسلة كتب تصدر تباعاً عن مؤلفات الإمام اللكنوي على رسالتين للإمام الأولى "تحفة الأخيار بإحياء سنة سيد الأبرار" وهي عبارة عن دراسة خصصها المؤلف لتعريف السنة النبوية المطهرة وبناها على ثلاثة أصول وخاتمة.
الأصل الأول هو تعريف السنة النبوية المطهرة وأن من مشمولها "سنة الخلفاء الراشدين والصحابة الهادين المهديين، وساق في ذلك جملة كبيرة من الأحاديث الواردة في هذا الباب، وذكر كل ما يتصل بثبوتها ومعناها من كلام المحدثين والفقهاء بإسهاب.
الأصل الثاني في تعريف (السنة المؤكدة) ومطلق السنة في مصطلح الفقهاء السادة الحنفية، وأورد من اثنين وعشرين فقيهاً أقوالهم في تعريفها، وناقشها واحداً واحداً، وحاكم بينها، وذكر من خلال ذلك فوائد فرائد من كتب الحنفية وغيرهم.
الأصل الثالث في حكم السنة المؤكدة، وتركها، وأورد فيه جملة كبيرة من أقوال العلماء، ثم ناقشها على طريقته بالدقة والاستقصاء، أما في الخاتمة والتي هي محور الكتاب، فذكر الأخبار الواردة في صلاة التراويح، واستقصاها ما استطاع، وشرح معناها وعلق عليها، ونقل أقوال أصحاب المذاهب الأربعة فيها، وجوّدَ وأجاد حتى صلحَت هذه (الخاتمة)أن تكون كتاباً مستقلاً بشأن صلاة التراويح وأقوال العلماء فيها، وجمع في ذلك من النقول ما لا ترام مجموعاً في غير هذا الكتاب، واستنكر من خلال كلامه ما رآه في المسجد الحرام سنة 1279، من قيام جماعات متفرقة يصلون التراويح أوزاعاً؛ وقال: يجب الزجرَ عنه والاجتماع على جماعة واحدة.
هذا على صعيد الرسالة الأولى أما الرسالة الثانية فهي تأتي تحت عنوان نخبة الأنظار على تحفة الأخيار وهي عبارة عن حاشية وضعها الإمام المصنف على الرسالة الأولى والتي ذكرنا سابقاً بأنها "تحفة الأخيار بإحياء سنة سيد الأبرار".
