لقد ارتبط الخوف الإجتماعي اليوم كثيراً بجيل الطلاب وخصوصاً طلاب الجامعات نتيجة لمعاناتهم بسبب تعرضهم لمشكلات نفسية وإجتماعية عديدة كضعف الدافع للتخاطب وعدم القدرة على إخفاء مشاعر الخوف والميل إلى العزلة وتجنب إقامة علاقات إجتماعية مما يؤدي إلى إعاقة تكيفهم مع الحياة الجامعية العامة على المدى البعيد إن لم يجدد من يخلصهم من واقع هذه المشكلات بالتوجيه والإرشاد وبناء الثقة بالنفس (محمود 1992).
ولهذا أحس الباحث بمشكلة بحثه من خلال التواجد في الجامعة المستنصرية ومن خلال الإحتكاك بالطلاب وظهور المشكلة وعدم وجود جواب لها، وكذلك من خلال تجواله ومشاهداته اليومية للطلاب وسوء حالتهم النفسية والصحية وتغيبهم عن الحضور إلى الجامعة، إضافة إلى كثرة الطلاب المؤجلين وخصوصاً للسنة الأولى ولأسباب نفسية منها عدم قدرتهم على التعبير عن ذاتهم وابتعادهم وانعزالهم عن الآخرين وعدم التزامهم بالدوام الرسمي وحضور المحاضرات. ولهذا أعد الباحث إستبانة إستطلاعية وزعت عشوائياً على (100) طالب وطالبة (50) طالباً و (50) طالبة في الجامعة المستنصرية لغرض الكشف والإستطلاع على المخاوف الإجتماعية ولمعرفة نسبة وجود مشكلة الخوف الإجتماعي لدى الطلبة وتأثيرها على حياتهم المستقبلية والتي جعلتهم يفضلون العزلة وعدم الإختلاط بالآخرين، وقد اختار الطالب الجامعة المستنصرية كمجتمع لبحثه لأنها جامعة تقع في وسط العاصمة ولأنها شهدت أحداث مؤلمة ولأن الباحث ينتمي لها بحكم دراسته في إحدى كلياتها ولوجود تسهيلات لتطبيق المقياس على العينة ولأنه تم تشخيص مشكلة البحث من خلال الإستبانة الموزعة عشوائياً والتي أشارت نتائجها إلى وجود مستويات عالية من المخاوف الإجتماعية لدى الطلبة.
