لما كان أكثر الناس قد اشتغلوا بالدنيا وشهواتها، وألهتهم عن الله تعالى والدار الآخرة، وسؤدي بهم هذا الحال- إن لم يسلم الله تعالى إلى الخسران المبين والعذاب الأليم. وكان السبيل إلى إيقاظهم من هذه الغفلة هو تنبيههم لحقارة الشيء الذي ألهاهم عن ذكر الله تعالى، وثوابه الأبدي، وهو: الدنيا الفانية، وشهواتها المنغصة المنقطعة.
وكان من أقرب الوسائل- أو أقربها- في التأثير ضرب المثال، ففرق بين قولك: الدنيا كخيال طيف، أو سحابة صيف، أو كظل زائل. لما كان الأمر كما ذكرت رأيت أن أضع هذا الكتاب: "مثل الحياة الدنيا"، وذكرت فيه أمثلة الحياة الدنيا مما ذكره الله تعالى في كتابه، وذكره رسوله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) في سنته، وفيهما الكافية والهداية والحمد لله رب العالمين. وألحق بذلك بعض الأمثلة من كلام العلماء والحكماء بأسلوب حسن جذاب بفضل الله عز وجل ومنته. وقد بلغت الأمثلة التي ذكرتها تبين مثالًا أو أكثر.
