تأتي دراستنا حول (علم الكلام الإسلامي في دراسات المستشرقين الألمان.. يوسف فان أس أنموذجاً) لِمَا حققته الدراسات الكلامية من تقدمٍ كبير تقوم الأعمال العديدة المتنوعة للباحثين من المُستشرقين الألمان – بخاصة – خير شاهدٍ عليه، وهو أمر يعود إلى نشر المؤلَّفات الكلامية ولاسيَّما ما يتعلَّق منها بتراث المعتزلة وتراث الإسماعيلية الفلسفي والديني وغيرهما من الفِرَق الإسلامية. وإنَّ الإلمام بما كُتِبَ في هذا الشأن يحتاج إلى عملٍ بيبلوغرافي مُطَّرِد، وحسبنا أن نُشير في أثناء دراستنا هذهِ إلى أهمِّ الأعمال واتجاهاتها.
لقد اتجهت أعمال المُستشرقين إلى التعرف على علم الكلام في مضمونهِ الذاتي وقرائنهِ التاريخية والحضارية وعلى مَعالِم المذاهب الكلاميَّة للفِرَق الإسلامية مثل المعتزلة والأشاعرة والإسماعيلية والامامية والإباضية من الخوارج. واتجه الاهتمام كذلك إلى دراسة كبريات القضايا الكلاميَّة مثل البحث في الصفاتِ الإلهية، وفي نظرية التكليف، وفي منزلة العقل عند المُتكلِّمين. واهتمت بعض الدراسات بالتعرف على أهمِّ الأعلام من المُتكلِّمين من مختلف المذاهب. واتجه الاهتمام إلى الكشف عن المؤثرات الثقافية في أنساق المُتكلِّمين فاهتم بعض الباحثين بالنظر في علاقة المُتكلِّمين ببعض الأحداث التاريخية المهمَّة في تاريخ الإسلام السياسي والديني والإجتماعي كالبروفيسور يوسف فان أس.
