يطل دافيد باكان على الفكر الفرويدي الذي اقتحم العالم فترك فيه رسالته العميقة والمعقدة ثم اختفى. إن المتأمل في سيرة فرويد الذاتية وبعض مراسلاته ونظرياته يكتشف (حالة يهودية) شعر فيها فرويد في مراحل مختلفة من حياته، فألقت بظلها على مناقشاته لبعض المفاهيم. وما هذا الكتاب إلا محاولة لمعالجة فرضية تتعلق بالخلفيات الفكرية للتحليل النفسي الفرويدي وبرهن وجود صلة ما بين فرويد وبين التراث اليهودي وتأثره به، ويهدف إلى البرهان أن تأكيد فرويد المتكرر لانتمائه للعرف اليهودي له دلالة كبيرة في تاريخ التحليل النفسي أكثر مما يظن الآن، فقد شارك فرويد في الصراعات وفي نشر الصوفية اليهودية وعندما وجد الفرصة سائحة استخدم من جعبة هذه الصوفية أسلحة للصراع.
