كان منهج هذا الكتاب، أن يقدم بين دفتيه محاولة للإجابة على السؤالين السابق ذكرهما وهما: ماذا نبحث.. ؟ وكيف نبحث .. ؟ من أجل تطوير المعرفة وإرساء قواعد العلم في مجال الصحافة.
وذلك في إطار المنظور الكلي الذي ينظر إلى الصحافة بوصفها عملية اجتماعية تتبادل اطرافها الحركة والتأثير، وتعمل جنبا إلى جنب مع العمليات الاجتماعية الأخرى تؤثر فيها وتتأثر بها. فتخضع هذه وتلك للبحث والدراسة الذي يحقق أهداف العلم في هذا المجال.
وفي إطار منهج العرض السابق ذكره، تم تقسيم هذا الكتاب إلى أربعة أبواب تضم أثنى عشر فصلا. تتناول الاجابة على السؤال: ماذا نبحث في الباب الأول، وكيف نبحث في الباب الثاني. ثم يتناول الباب الثالث والرابع اتجاهات دراسة العملية الصحفية وبصفة خاصة دراسة المحتوى والشكل وقراءالصحف.
