أن للأجيال معانيها، وللسنين أصداءها، تقرأ بين جنباتها تواريخ الشعوب وآثار الأمم مسطورة بكثير من الدماء وغزير الدموع، ولا بد لبحث الآثار وتدبر التواريخ من نظر أعمق من نظر العين، وتثبت أبعد من وثبة الفكر، ليستطيع العقل أن يواكب السنين ويمشي خلال الأجيال.
ومن وقف على آثار الأمة المارونية، وتاريخها العريق المجيد، وقرأ من وراء سطوره قصص الدهور السحيقة والمتوسطة والحديثة، وجدها تنطوي تحت شطرين: شطر قوامه حب الكثلكة والتعلق الشديد بأسيادها البابوات، عن إخلاص لم يعرف التاريخ له نداً، وشطر متطوقة التفاني في سبيل الكثلكة بالعمل على بث روحها وزرع بذارها في قلوب الطوائف المنفصلة عنها، وتسهيل المهمة الرسولية على المرسلين الأفرنج، بل مشاطرتهم ذلك، لنشر لواء البابا على أقطار المشرق.
أما الشطر الأول فتجند له الإعلام الغابرون كالدويهي وفرحات والسمعاني، ثم مسعد والدبس ودريان وغيرهم كثير، وأشبعوه الدرس والتمحيص بما أوتوا من غزارة العلم ووفرة النبوغ، فاثبتوا للملا أن المارونية، في ربوع المشرق، هي جرثومة الكثلكة الأصلية ونواتها الأصيلة المتحدرة من صلب الكنيسة الرومانية، مثل الإنفصال الأرثوذكسي، حتى أنه حين كان المئون من رهبان مارون الأبطال يؤيدون عقيدة رومية في المجمع الخلكيدوني، ويدافعون عنها، مستشهدين لأجلها بسفك دمائهم، يروون بها سهولة سورية الفسيحة، فتغص السهول، وتفيض الدماء مهدورة، يستعين بهاء "العاصي" على إزدياد فيضانه وشدة جريانه، ويستبدل بحمرتها القانية صبغة مياهه الزرقاء، في ذلك الحين كانت ديار المغرب، في معظم أرجائها الأوروبية، وجميع أقطارها الأميركية، مسرحاً ومرقداً لظلام الوثنية، وضباب الجهل والهمجية، لم تستضئ سماواتها بعد بثور الإنجيل، ولم تعرف شعوبها اسم المسيح.
