لندخل إلى مجال الاستشراق. أفلا يتعلق الأمر بمثال محكم لتفاعل مقصود وفاعل بين العالم الأكاديمي للبحث والدبلوماسية، بل السياسة العليا؟، إذ إن للدراسات الشرقية في الغرب جذور متنوعة: فبعدما نشأت كتخصصات مساعدة للاهوت، استخدمت منذ البداية لغايات نفعية، وخصوصاً دينية، دعمت وترسخت كتخصصات أكاديمية برعاية الدول الوطنية التوسعية والاستعمارية غالباً. واتبعت في الوقت ذاته، مع تأخر ملحوظ، تطور العلم وأسسه النظرية والمنهجية في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين. ومع خضوعها طوال عقدين من السنين للنقاش، في أعقاب صدور كتاب إدوارد سعيد "الاستشراق"، لا تزال تطرح سؤالاً هو: أهي هذا المشروع الدنئ الذي يقوم على ابتداع الشرق باعتباره عالماً خيالياً ونافعاً، بل لا بد منه للمشروع الاستعماري الغربي الذي يصفه إدوارد سعيد، أم هي بالأحرى جزء مكمل للعلوم الإنسانية التي لا يمكن تصورها، من حيث التعريف، إلا كونية، وهي من ثم إرث وملك للبشرية جمعاء؟ إلا أن طرح هذا السؤال لا يعني أن الاستشراق لم يستخدم، للأسف، وسيستخدم لغايات بعيدة عن الطموحات العلمية النبيلة..
نحن في مدينة مارست مؤسستان هما (الجامعة الأمريكية ببيروت) و(معهد الآداب الشرقية) في جامعة القديس يوسف الدراسات الشرقية منذ القرن التاسع عشر طبقاً لمناهج الاستشراق الغربي. ونحن أيضاً، على بعد خمسين عاماً من التدخلات الأولى لمتخصصين ذوي أًل عربي في عمدة الاستشراق التي هي "موسوعة الإسلام"، وأظن أنهما الفلسطيني وليد الخالدي والعراقي عبد العزيز الدوري في سنوات (1950م). وبصفة أكثر عمومية، يمكن القول إن القرن العشرين شهد اختيار النخبة الأكاديمية العربية مناهج الدراسات الشرقية التي عممها المستشرقون. ولهذا السبب تحديداً نحن بهذه الكثرة في الجامعات الفرنسية لكتابة أطروحات حول مجتمعاتنا أو مجتمعات قريبة منها.
..صحيح أن الجامعات العربية تبنت تقنيات الدراسات الشرقية، بل وتجاوزت ذلك إلى ملامسة الفكر النقدي، لكنها فارقته. فالفكر النقدي اليوم شديد البعد عنا.. ما ينبغي على الاستشراق، استشراق المتخصصين، أن يقوله لنا، نحن جامعيي العالم العربي. فحتى لا نصير ثانية فقط موضوعات للاستشراق، والاستشراق سيكون هذه المرة أمريكيا بالخصوص، علينا أن نعيد امتلاك جزء من تقاليد الدراسات الشرقية، هذا الجزء الذي يرتكز على الفكر النقدي والمقتضيات الأكاديمية.
