عاش النوخذة بزرك بن شهريار بين منتصف القرنين الثالث والرابع الهجريين، وقد عاصر عامل الخليفة العباسي المقتدر بالله على عمان، وكان أحد النواخذة المشهورين في ذلك العصر – جاب البحار والتقى بكثير من الشعوب، وجاء كتابه " عجائب الهند" ثمرة تلك الرحلات؛ فقد جمع فيه كل ما سمعه من قصص وحكايات بلغت في طرافتها وغرابتها حداً لا يمكن تصديقه.
لكننا نقرأ بين سطور ذلك الكتاب حقائق تاريخية لا يمكن إنكارها؛ كاتساع الملاحة العربية في المحيط الهندي، ومشاهير نواخذتها وربابنتها في عمان والخليج العربي واليمن، وصفات البلدان البحرية التي كانت المراكب العربية تتردد إليها، وشعوب هذه البلدان وعاداتهم وتجاربهم، وطرق الملاحة وقواعدها في تلك الأزمان.
وكتابنا هذا يحاول مقاربة نصوص ذلك الكتاب وإعادة ترتيبها، وتوثيق ما يصح منها بالمقارنة مع ما ورد في مصادر المرحلة نفسها، ويحاول غربلة السليم من السقيم من تلك الروايات والحكايات.
