لم تكن شخصية مونشهاوزن خيالية، فهو هيروغوس كارل فريدريك فون مونشهاوزن (1720 ـ 1797) الذي عاش في منطقة هانوفر والتحق بالجيش ثم حصل على رتبة نقيب في سلاح الفرسان واشترك في حربين منفصلتين مع الاتراك بين عامي 1737 ـ 1739 ثم استقال وتقاعد عام 1752، وانضم الى مجموعة من اصدقائه القدامى، يمتعهم بحكاياته ولكنه اصيب بصدمة حينما عرف ان الناس من حوله اطلقوا عليه لقب «البارون الكذاب» ومع ذلك اقيم له تمثال بعد وفاته في مدينته «بود نويردر» وهو يمتطي النصف الاول من حصانه كما جاء في احدى حكاياته.
