تأتي هذه الدراسة من منطلق أن الأحداث التي شكّلت منعطفات هامة في حياة المجتمعات القديمة ما هي إلا رد فعل ظاهري أو محصلة لكل ما يدور من صراعات نظرية أو عملية تتبلور في النهاية في شكل حدث تاريخي، ولذا تصبح دراسة مثل هذه المجتمعات بكل ظروفها البيئية والحياتية عاملاً مساعداً لتفهم الأحداث التاريخية التي قد يصعب علينا أحياناً تفسيرها إلا في ظل فهمنا التام لما كان يدور في هذه المجتمعات.
فمن المعروف أن المجتمع الروماني في الحقيقة لم يكن مجتمعاً مبدعاً مثل اليونان ولكنه تأثر بالنظم التي انتقلت إليه من شواطىء البحر المتوسط، خاصة من المدن اليونانية التي أسسها اليونان على الشواطىء الجنوبية لإيطاليا، حيث أصبحت مصدراً للأفكار وللنظم التي انتقلت مع السلع التجارية اليونانية إلى مدينة روما وهي في طور نشأتها فأصبحت القوة المسيطرة في حوض البحر المتوسط وتتلمذت على ايدي اليونان في مجالات الأدب والفكر والثقافة بحيث أصبحت الثقافة اليونانية لازمة من لوازم أي مثقف روماني وهكذا حافظ الرومان على التراث اليوناني ونشروه على سواحل البحر المتوسط.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب عن التاريخ الروماني ليتناول أهم الأحداث التاريخية التي مرت بإيطاليا وروما منذ أقدم العصور وحتى بداية العصر الأمبراطوري.
ويحتوي الكتاب على إحدى عشر فصلاً يسبقها تمهيد يتناول الظروف الجغرافية لإيطاليا واثرها في تاريخ الرومان ومصادر التاريخ الروماني ثم تتتابع الفصول لتتناول تاريخ الرومان السياسي منذ أقدم العصور حتى بداية العصر الأمبراطوري وعصر أغسطس، ثم الفصول الخاصة بعلاقة روما بمصر وسوريا وبلاد العرب، ثم الخاتمة وتناولت فيها بعض أسباب سقوط الأمبراطورية الرومانية.
