مهنة المؤرخ مهنة شاقة، وعسيرة، فليست مهنة يقدمها لإرضاء المتلقي من خلال مزج صناعة التاريخ وتركيب مفرداته وتحليل وثائقه، وينبغي أن لا يمزج بين الرواية والأحداث، لأن التاريخ علم في ذاته وفن في كتابته، إن كتابة التاريخ يشوبها الحذر لأن منتقديها كثر لتصادم معارفهم وأذواقهم، وفي نفس الوقت يجلب الطمأنينة واليقين والسكينة، ولهذا فإن المؤرخ هو خبير الزمن الماضي، ويفرق بين مهنته ومهنة علم الاجتماع والفلاسفة والإعلاميين.
إن وقائع النشاط البشري هو من الزمن الماضي، وحراسته تكون من قبل المؤرخ. هذا المؤرخ الذي وهب حياته في تتبع الماضي، وينقب في الأشياء الميتة – أحداث وأفكار – لكي يحيها للواقع المعاصر، كيف كانت حياة المجتمع وما هي إنجازاته الفكرية والاقتصادية؟
في حقيقة الأمر أن التاريخ يتشكل من ترتيب أحداث الماضي في سياق قوامه السبب والنتيجة، وأن سلوك البشر يكتسب من طبيعة الأشياء وواقع حياتهم. والسببية لا تعني سبب وقوع الحدث إلا نادراً، حيث تلقى نقداً لاذعاً عند الفلاسفة والمفكرين، إنما تعدّ من تعليلات الحدث حينما يلزمنا طرح «لماذا حدث ذلك؟». ولهذا فإن هناك أسباباً عديدة تؤثر في وقوع الحدث، وأن ينظر إليها المؤرخ، والنتائج التي يتوصل إليها المؤرخ لا تكون حتمية بالضرورة؛ لأن الأشياء في التاريخ يجب ألا تكون حتمية إلا مجازاً.
