الإمام محمد بن علي المعروف بالحكيم الترمذي من أئمة التصوف في القرن الثالث الهجري، ومن متقدِّمي المؤلفين فيه، وكان مع تصوّفه محدِّثاً كبيراً، ومؤلفاً في علوم شتى من التفسير والحديث والكلام وغيرها.
وهذه الرسالة من آثار الحكيم الترمذي التي تُنشر لأول مرة، وهي إجابةٌ لسائل سأل: هل فرضٌ على من يعبد الله أن يعبده على طلب الثواب والفرار من العقاب؟ فأجابه الحكيم ـ بكلام دقيق المعاني ـ مبيناً مراتب العباد في العبودية وأحوالهم، وأن العمل على طلب الثواب والهرب من العقاب لا تكون الأعمال معه صافيةً من الهوى وحظ النفس، وشرَح درجات الترقي في تصفية الأعمال حتى وصل درجة المفرِّدين الذين سرورُهم بذات مولاهم تعالى لا بالثواب. وبيّن أحوال أصحاب تلك الدرجات. وما يستشهد به الحكيم من أحاديث وروايات فإنه يرويه بسنده إلى منتهاه كما هي عادة المحدِّثين.
أما محقق هذه الرسالة فبحّاثة مختصّ بسيرة الحكيم الترمذي وآثاره، وله في هذا السياق دراسات مستفيضة.
