تاريخ الكتابة التاريخية العربية قديم ومجيد ؛ فقد أنجب الطبرى والمسعودى وابن عبد الحكم والمقريزى ... وغيرهم . ثم جاءت فترة انقطاع بسبب التدهور الذى ألم بالعالم العربى كله. وعندما بدأت محاولات الدراسة التاريخية الحديثة فى العالم العربى بدأت تظهر بعض الكتابات فى التاريخ الإسلامى وفى التاريخ الحديث وغيرهما من فروع الدراسة التاريخية. ولكن تاريخ الحروب الصليبية حتى تلك الفترة ظل وقفًا على الكتب الأجنبية وترجماتها . بيد أن هذا الكتاب الذى نقدمه فى دار عين للدراسات والبحوث الانسانية والاجتماعية ، والذى ألفه الأستاذ سيد على الحريرى بعنوان «الأخبار السنية فى تاريخ الحروب الصليبية» ، هو المحاولة الأولى لكتابة تاريخ الحروب الصليبية من وجهة النظر العربية . وقد صدر فى السنة الأخيرة من القرن التاسع عشر 1899م. وفى هذا الكتاب سيجد القارئ أن صاحبه يسير على نهج المؤرخين العرب القدماء وأنه قريب جدا من الجبرتى ومن سبقوه ، وبعيد جدًا عن المؤرخين الذين جاءوا بعده. ولم يضع المؤلف عناوين لكل فصل ؛ وإنما وضع عناوين لكل حادثة من الحوادث التى يتعرض لها الكتاب على امتداد تاريخ الوجود الصليبى فوق الأرض العربية فى فلسطين وبلاد الشام. وتكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب فى أنه المحاولة الأولى من جانب مؤلف عربى لدراسة تاريخ الحروب الصليبية
