هذا الكتاب الذائعَ الصِّيتِ "سلوان المطاع في عدوان الأتباع"، وهو كتابٌ يشبه روضةً غنّاء، تضمُّ أزهاراً مختلفةَ الأنواع والألوانِ، فمن آيةٍ قرآنية، إلى حديثٍ نبويِّ، إلى بيتِ شعرٍ، إلى مثلٍ أو حَكمةٍ، إلى قصةٍ تاريخيّةٍ أبطالُها من سلاطين التاريخ العربي أو العالمي، إلى قِصَّةٍ أخلاقية أبطالُها من عامة الناس، إلى قصّةٍ رمزيةٍ ساقها المؤلِّف المبدِعُ على لسان الحيوان.
يتألف الكتابُ من خمسةِ أبوابٍ رئيسة - إذا صحَّ أن نسمّي كلَّ سلوانةٍ باباً - خصّ المؤلّفُ البابَ الأول من أبواب الكتاب لخُلُقِ التفويض، أي: تفويض الأمر إلى الله تعالى، أما الباب الثاني فهو في خلق التأسِّي بالأنبياء والخلفاء الراشدين ومن اتبعهم بإحسان، وأما الباب الثالث فموضوعه خلقُ الصبر، وهو خلقٌ غنيٍّ عن البيان، وجاء الباب الرابع ليتحدَّثَ عن خُلقِ الرضا بالقضاء، وهذا الخُلُقُ من أركان الإيمان الستة، أما الباب الخامس فهو في خلق الزهدِ، والزهدُ في الإسلام أن يأخذ الإنسانُ من الدنيا على قَدْرِ حاجته.
