يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى إيجاد الترابط الداخلي بين أداء القراءة والتعلم وفهم النص والتفكير ذو المستوى الأعلى الحادث في المخ، فهو يناقش جوهر عملية قراءة النص كنشاط إنساني طبيعي، ولكونها تصل إلى منزلة راقية تمتد إلى أبعد من مجرد عملية فهم بسيطة للكلمات والمفاهيم المطبوعة التي تشكل النص. فقراءة النصوص بفهم يمثل نشاط طبيعي في هذا العالم، ولذلك يجب النظر إليها على أنها خبرة (أو ممارسة) أكثر من كونها مجرد مصدر للحصول على المعلومات، فهي ترتبط بالتعلم والتفكير، وهذا ما يجعلنا ننظر إلى الفهم القرائي على أنه لا ينفصل عن التفكير، ويعبر عن نشاط المخ ككل. وفي الحقيقة يرى الفهم القرائي بأنه التفكير نفسه. وهذه الرؤية تعد منظور ثري يسمح لنا بفهم أن عملية القراءة تعد اكتساب خبرة تتجاوز وتمتد إلى ما وراء الكلمات والمفاهيم والجمل بداخل النص، وفي ضوئها يمكن رؤية الفهم القرائي كممارسة بنائية وخبرة ذات مغزى، ولهذا جاء هذا الكتاب ليتناول سيكولوجية فهم النصوص المقروءة من خلال تسعة فصول كانت كالتالي: (الفصل الأول: مفهوم القراءة، الفصل الثاني: مهارات الفهم القرائي ومستوياته، الفصل الثالث: العمليات المعرفية في فهم النص، الفصل الرابع: إطار عام لفهم النص، الفصل الخامس: أداء المخ البشري أثناء قراءة النص "رؤية في فهم النص"، الفصل السادس: دور المعرفة السابقة في فهم النص العملي، الفصل السابع: النماذج المعرفية في تفسير فهم النصوص العلمية، الفصل الثامن: النماذج والإستراتيجيات التدريسية القائمة على النماذج المعرفية، الفصل التاسع: التحول من استخدام الإستراتيجية إلى تعليم الإستراتيجية للطلاب "كمحور من محاور فهم النص العلمي").
