إن مجالات التصوير الفوتوغرافي واسعة جدا ، ابتداء من التصوير العائلي البسيط وصولا إلى تطبيقات العلمية. وفي أيامنا هذه أصبحت جميع التقنيات التصويرية بمتناول الهواة، باستثناء الأعمال التطبيقية المختصة ( الصور الطبية أو الصور بالمجهر الالكتروني مثلا). وهؤلاء الهواة ليس بوسعهم بلوغ التصوير العادي فقط ( الرحلات، العطل، تصوير الوجه المناظر ، التحقيق الصحفي ) بل أصبح بإمكانهم القيام بتصويرات خاصة كالتصوير القريب جدا والتصوير المجهري وتصوير الأشخاص البعيدين جدا ( صور الحيوانات التى تعيش في الطبيعة) وتصوير المناظر التحتمائيةSous- marine والمستندات وحتى التصوير بالأشعة الماتحت حمراء . كما باستطاعة هؤلاء الهواة أيضا استعمال التصوير في الحقل المهني لدراسات تقنية، لتنمية المبيعات بالدعاية للاعلانات والتدريب التقني. والمهم في هذه الحالات الخاصة هو اختيار الآلة الأكثر موافقة . فإنه يوجد بالفعل تشكيلة واسعة من آلات التصوير والقطع المكملة التى لا تتمتع جميعها بالإمكانات نفسها كما سنرى فيما بعد.
