لم يخطر ببالى عندما صدرت الطبعة الأولى من هذا الكتاب, أن عامين فقط سيشهدان ما اعتدنا على توقع حدوثه خلال عقدين على الأقل, وخلالهما, اندفع الاستشراق إلى أقصاه, وتحول إلى خوذة بسعة الشرق كله, إن لم تكن بسعة الكوكب, وكان التعاقيب بين موت مفكر اقترن اسمه بالاستشراق هو ادوارد سعيد وبين سقوط بغداد دراماتيكيا, وشهدت هذه الفترة انبعاث سجال ظن المتفائلون أنه توارى بين شرق وغرب, واستعمار وتحرر, وتمدد وانحسار.
وقد صدرت كتب أخرى عن الاستشراق وحوله.. وفيه أيضا, إضافة إلى تعليقات جديدة حول ماسمى الاستغراب وعلينا أن نعترف بأن رصد ما كتبه جيلان من المستشرقين لم يكن بالجدية والشمول اللذين رصد بهما نتاج الحقبة الكلاسكية من الاستشراق. فالعالم تغير كثيرا, ولم يعد الغرب مجرد جهة فى الجغرافيا, ولم يعد متجانسا أيضا. وكانت أطروحات صموئيل هانتتجتون مثار حوار لم ينقطع بعد حول صراع الحضارات مما أثار مجددا ثنائية الحوار والصراع. أو التداخل والتخارج ما لم يتغير بعد بشكل يدعونا إلى إعادة النظر فى الاستشراق هو إصرار فلول الاستشراق التقليدى على تأبيد الشرق فى التعريف المحشو داخل قالب جبس, صاغه وعى به من الشقاء بقدر ما به من الافتراق عن التاريخ لصالح السياسة التى تتعامل مع هذا التاريخ بوصفه منجزا لمتوالية السطو, منذ القرصان حتى الجنرال الذى يحلم بإسقاط الدول خلال ساعات فقط.
