لم يكن الدّرس البلاغي العربي إختصاصاً ينفرد به البلاغيون فحسب، وظلت صفة البلاغي متأخرة بكثير عن تاريخ التفكير في البلاغة، فكانت تَرِكَة مشاعاً؛ اشتغل بها النّقاد، والمتكلمون، والنحويون والفلاسفة، وضمن نَسَقِ التخصّص العام نجد تخصّصات أخرى تتفرع عنه وتتصل به؛ منها ما انصرف إلى المجاز، أو البيان، أو البديع، أو النّظم، ومنها ما اشتغل بالأسلوب، أو التخييل، أو الحجاج.
هكذا، تكون البلاغة بلاغات، وبتعدّدها تتعدّد تواريخها وخصائصها؛ بين قديم فَهِم البلاغة في كلّياتها قبل أن تُختَزَل وتُحنّط، وبين حديث وَعى منذ مطلع القرن العشرين بضرورة تجديد النفس البلاغي، فتراه يؤسسها على الشروحات أو الأسلوب أو القيم، وبين معاصر يُمثل منعرجاً حاسماً في تاريخ البلاغة العربية؛ يتعلق الأمر بالفكر البلاغي العربي المعاصر الذي تمخضت عنه مفاهيم البلاغة الرحبة أو العامة.
تمثل هذه المرحلة تاريخاً أساساً في نسق البحث الذي وسمته بـ "الفكر البلاغي العربي المعاصر: مقدمة في مشروع البلاغة الموسّعة".
إن خروج البلاغة من ربقة الإنحسار والتحنيط لا يعني أنها بمأمن ومنجى من إنحسار جديد، خاصة وأن سؤالات بلاغة الحجاج وبلاغة الأسلوب تشتد وتحتدم - وهي أسئلة لا تختلف عن ثنائيات النقد العربي القديم من قبيل (القديم والمحدث، اللفظ والمعنى، الصنعة والطبع) وتاريخ هذه الأسئلة يشهد أنها مثّلت بدايات تضييق دوائر البلاغة -، وبين البلاغات المتصارعة توجد بلاغة جامعة أسميتها بـ "البلاغة الموسعة".
