تحكي هذا الكتاب قصة جوفاني دروغو الذي غادر منزله في صباح يوم من أيام أيلول, غادر المدينة للالتحاق بحصن باستياني حيث يقضي هناك الشطر الأعظم من حياته. كانت رحلة إلى خارج العالم المسكون, إلى حدود الفانية للعالم, في مبنى عسكري يبدو قديماً ومتصحراً.
يقضي جوفاني دروغو ثلاثين سنة وهو يتحمل ألم الحصون الصغيرة المحارس, المباني العسكرية. وهو ينتظر مع الآخرين أن يحدث شيء ما من جهة الصحراء التي يطل الحصن عليها ,و لكن لا يحدث إلا عندما تكون حياته قد وصلت إلى نهايتها, لذا فإنه يعود إلى المدينة, وقبل أن يصل يقرر قضاء ليلته في لوكاندا صغيرة, بائسة, ومجهولة, وهناك تنتهي حياته. إن القصة هنا ترتدي زياً مجازياً, وهي تكاد تمس كل الناس المنخرطين في أعمالهم المختلفة, إنها تعالج المعنى الأخير لأي عمل, أو لأي وجود.
