صرح ابن عصفور في كلامه أن الصرف ميزان العربية أى بدونه لا يكون فيها غير طريق البطلان، الذي لا نميز فيه بين الصحيح والخطأ، ولا نعرف سقيم الكلام من صحيحه فلذلك قد جمعنا في هذا الكتاب بعض الرسائل التي قد تنجو بنا إلى طريق المعرفة، وترجعنا عن سقيم الكلام كي نستحق لقب العرب الفصحاء لا المتعربين أو العاميين فاطرق باب هذا الكتاب وتعرف على القليل من العلم عسى أن تنال من الشرف جانباً.
