أُلقيت هذه المحاضرات السبع التي يتألف منها الكتاب بشكل منفصل في جامعة تيترو كوليسيو، بيونيس أيرس، بين شهري تموز وآب من عام 1977؛ لذا قام بارثولوميو بجمع هذه المحاضرات وإعدادها للنشر، بالتعاون مع "بورخس" الذي أجرى عليها تعديلات واسعة.
لقد كان "لبورخس"، بالإضافة إلى "ذواته" الأدبية المتعددة الأخرى، وجوداً آخر مستقلاً كمحاضر على مدى السنوات الأربعين الماضية، وكأيّ جانب مستقلّ من حياته، فإنّ هذه المحاضرات تسلّط ضوءاً مختلفاً على مجمل شخصيته، وتوضّح أكثر تشابك عوالمه المتشعبة؛ وهي تكشف جميعها عن القفزات المتعالقة في إنتباه "بورخس"، عن سيلان ذاكرته وعقله.
وإذا أردنا أن نفهم "بورخس"، فمن المهمّ أن نتذكّر ذلك، إذ إنّ التجربة الأدبية لديه هي أكثر توهّجاً وتأثيراً من التجربة الحقيقية، أو، بتعبير أفضل، لا يوجد أي فرق يُذكر بين التجربتين، وهكذا عندما يتحدث "بورخس" عن الكتب والكتّاب، فإنه كمن يتحدث عن المناظر الطبيعية والرحلات، لتكون بالتالي قراءاته أكثر أصالةً ومتعةً.
ومن المهمّ إذن عند قراءة هذه المحاضرات أن يتخيّلها المرءُ مرويةً من قبل بورخس، وأن يتتبع القفزات في النصّ وكأنها قفزات في إنتباه حيّ، ذلك أنّ المحاضرات تكشف عن الإختلاف بين المروي والمكتوب: اللغة لم تروّض تماماً لتناسب الجبرية الكتابية، ثّمة متحدّث حاضرٌ، وخيطٌ من صوت على المرء إقتفاء أثره، ويكفي المرء أن يتخيّل أنّ تلك المحاضرة عن "العمى" يلقيها "بورخس" الأعمى، ليدركَ أنّ حضوره قد أضفى بعداً أكثر دراميةً على لغة المحاضرة.
وقد جاءت عناوين هذه المحاضرات كالتالي: 1-الكوميديا الإلهية، 2-كوابيس، 3-ألف ليلة وليلة، 4-البوذية، 5-الشعر، 6-القابالا، 7-العمى؛ وقد إلحق بقصائد مختارة.
