Book Description

English 5452 is a graded course for university students who are not initiated into translation. It aims to introduce students to basic translation skills and to consolidate the learners’ knowledge of English through providing them with sufficient training in translating simple, compound and complex English sentences into Arabic, using a variety of text-types that include high frequency vocabulary and expressions.

The course also concentrates on the discussion of a number of grammatical issues that are typically problematic for Arabic learners.

Since translation is an exercise which involves dealing with various levels and aspects of Arabic and English, it is inevitable that the medium of discussion and instruction should, in our case, to both Arabic and English.

English 5452 is designed for use in independent-study programmes as well as in the classroom. It consists of six units. Each unit is self-contained, and students following this graded syllabus are advised to work on these units in order in which they are presented.

Upon completing this course, students should be able to:
1- Make use of reference books, particularly dictionaries, glossaries, etc., and find right words of constructions that may best meet their needs,
2- find suitable Arabic equivalents for closed- system words of low information value and text specific terminologies,
3- infer or discover the implications of English words by examining what the different components of words mean by themselves,
4- be aware of the basic differences and similarities between certain aspects and conventions of Arabic and English,
5- translate from English into Arabic a variety of text-types of diversified contexts and on work-a-day topics,
6- render suitable translations of texts containing cultural, text-specific or non equivalent words or phrases.
