لك في هذا الكتاب-أيها القارئ-ثلاثة موارد... تبيان حجة طريفة أو معرفة حيلة لطيفة-أو الاستفادة من نادرة عجيبة. وأنت من ذلك في ضحك إذا شئت وفي لهو إذا مللت الجد، ومع ذهاب الجاحظ إلى القول بصلاح البكاء للطباع.. فهو يقول: " فما ظنك بالضحك الذي لا يزال صاحبه في غاية السرور إلى أن ينقطع عنه سببه... ولو كان الضحك قبيحاً من الضاحك وقبيحاً من المضحك، لما قيل للزهرة والحبر والحلي والقصر المبني: كأنه يضحك ضحكاً.
بل إن الجاحظ يستدل لفضيلة الضحك بقوله تعالى "وإنه هو أضحك وأبكي، وأنه هو أمات وأحيا".. فوضع الضحك في مقابل الحياة، ووضع البكاء في مقابل الموت.. وإن الله لا يضيف إلى نفسه القبيح، ولا يمن على خلقه بالنقص. وهكذا تجد أن الجاحظ يعد الضحك من مصلحة الطباع، ولا ريب إذ أنه من أصل الطباع وأساس التركيب.. ولفضل خصال الضحك عند العرب تسمى أولادها بالضحاك وبسام... وإذا مدحوا قالوا: هو ضحوك السن، وبسام العشيات.. وإذا ذموا قالوا: عبوس، وكالح وشئيم المحيا... الخ.
لكن الجاحظ لم يفته أن يقنن لمذهبه في الضحك.. حتى يقول للضحك موضع، وله مقدار.. وللمزح موضع وله مقدار حتى جازهما أحد، وقصر عنهما أحد، صار الفاصل خطلاً والتقصير نقصاً. فالناس لم يعيبوا الضحك إلا بقدر، وللن يعيبوا المزح إلا بقدر، وحتى أريد بالمزح النفع، وبالضحك الشيء الذي جعل له، صار المزح جداً والضحك وقاراً. ويبقى البخلاء، كتاب نادراً من كتب الأدب.. ينمي الموهبة الأدبية ويمتع ويفيد ويعرض صوراً لنماذج بشرية تحسبها وهي تتكلم نابضة بالحركة والحياة في حولك هنا أو هناك.
