"نجدة السؤال" هو كتاب فريد في بابه، مفيد لأرباب العلم وطلابه، بدأه المؤلف وهو أبي البركات بن الأنباري بذكر السبب الكامن خلف تأليفه له وهو يقول: "أن جماعة من الطلبة سألوه أن يوضح لهم الفرق بين (أو) و(أم) مع الهمزة وهل في الاستفهام؟ تلك هي خلاصة الفكرة التي قام عليها هذا الكتاب، ويذكر المؤلف أنه تحاور مع بعض علماء الجدل، فلم يجد واحداً منهم يعرف كيفية تركيب السؤال، والفرق بين أنواعه.
وجاء ابن الأنباري بعد ذلك بأربعة مطالب في السؤال، وشرحها شرحاً وافياً، وهي: لم كان سؤال (أو) يجب أن يكون بأحد الحكمين لا بعينه؟ لم كان جوابه (نعم) أو (لا)؟ ولم كان سؤال (أم) في الرتبة بعد سؤال (أو)؟ لم وجب التعيين في جواب سؤال (أم).
وفي ختام الكتاب ذكر ابن الأنباري أن السؤال المطابق لفرض السائل هو: "أم) مع الهمزة، فإن قصد السائل أن يرتب السؤال (أم) بعد سؤال (أو) مع الهمزة أو هل، لم يكن السؤال فاسداً، وإنما طول على نفسه، من غير مسيس حاجة دعته إلى التطويل.
