لأن دراسة الدافعية قديمة قدم توجه الإنسان نحو تفسير سلوكه، فكان لابد من عرض موجز للنظريات الكلاسيكية والتوجهات البحثية القديمة، وحيث يمكن تمييز الجديد على أرضية ما انتهى إليه القدامى المثابرون، ولهذا الغرض فقد اشتملت الدراسة الحالية على ثلاثة أبواب، فاختص الباب الأول منها بماهية الدافعية، وتضمن ثلاثة فصول عرضت لنظريات الدافعية القديمة ومصادر الحاجات الدافعية، ومع استكشاف بعض الإتجاهات البحثية الحديثة للدافعية، فقد تم عرضها في الباب الثاني الذي احتوى فصولاً ثلاثة أيضاً، متناولة للإتجاهات الحديثة للدافعية في ثلاث زوايا، الأولى: تختص بالمنحىالتكاملي في دراسة الدافعية، والزاوية الثانية تدور حول دراسة الدافعية المتضمنة في أبعاد وسمات حديثة في دراسات علم النفس، أم الزاوية الثالثة فقد توجهت نحو دراسة الأبعاد التطبيقية للدافعية في مجال التعلم، وهو المجال لاذي كان لابد أن يغلب على المؤلف الحالي؛ لعلاقته بعلم النفس التربوي ولأننا جزء من عالمنا العربي الذي نحاول أن نقف على أحدث توجهاته في دراسة الدافعية، فقد اختص الباب الثالث بجوانب البحث العربي في الدافعية، سواء أكان من جانب التنظير أم من جانب البحث التجريبي.
