كثيراً ما يساء استخدام مفهوم العلم من قبل مجموعات شتى كالصحفيين والمعلمين والسياسيين، وكذلك العلماء أنفسهم حيث يوظفون مفهوم العلم توظيفات مختلفة. إذ يمثل العلم للبعض الحصول على امتيازات خاصة، كما يبدو للبعض الآخر أنه المعرفة الحقيقية، ويراه آخرون بحثاً موضوعياً لظاهرة تجريبية.
يهدف هذا الكتاب بتعرضه لمداخل متعددة للمعرفة إلى إظهار المزايا التي يتصف بها المدخل العلمي لأولئك الأفراد الذين يحملون هما عاماً ويهتمون ببحث المشكلات الاجتماعية، ولأكاديميين يهمهم الحصول على أهم وأحدث الخبرات والنظريات في مناهج البحث العلمي، هؤلاء الذين يبحثون عن إمكانية الحصول على معرفة موثوقة حول الأمور المتعلقة بالخبرة الإنسانية مثل "الاجتماع" و"السياسة" و"الاقتصاد" و" السيكولوجيا" بعبارة أخرى، كيف يمكن أن يساعد المدخل العلمي في فهم ظواهر مختلفة مثل التضخم والبطالة والبيروقراطية وغيرها.
ما يتضمنه الكتاب يعارض أساليب متعددة اعتمدوها الناس للوصول إلى المعرفة مثل ألأسلوب الروحي أو الفلسفي أو السلطوي الذي يستند إلى وجود أشخاص يعتقد أنهم مؤهلون لإنتاج المعرفة بسبب مكانتهم الاجتماعية أو السياسية كالشيوخ في المجتمعات القبلية، أو زعماء دينيين في المجتمعات الدينية، أو ملوكاً في المجتمعات الملكية، أو علماء في المجتمعات العلمية.
إن المعرفة التي تعد "علمية" اليوم قد تصبح "غير علمية" في المستقبل، لذلك فإن مفهوم العلم لا يتعلق بأي منظومة معرفية وإنما بمنهجية محددة، ولهذه الأسباب يعتمد الكتاب مصطلح "العلم" على أنه المعرفة التي يتم الوصول إليها بمنهجية علمية، إذ لا يمكن القول أن أية دراسة لظاهرة ما تعتبر علماً، وكل معرفة يرفضها العلم إنما يرفضها لاعتبارات منهجية.
