بحث مسهب ومعمق في المعتقدات والأساطير العربية قبل الإسلام. سعى المؤلف عبر تقصيه للظواهر الأسطورية العربية إلى إثبات وجود تراث أسطوري للعرب في الفترة الجاهلية وما قبل.
هذا الكتاب هو ثمرة مجهود كبير، أنفقه المؤلف في التنقيب وتقليب الكتب الصفراء والبيضاء، الضخم منها والصغير، بُغية أن يثبت بذلك أن للعرب الجاهليين أساطير كما لغيرهم من الأمم، وأن في هذه الأساطير والمعتقدات البدائية الشيء الكثير من جمال الطفولة العقلية، بحيث تستحق أن تكون مادة للأقلام العربية، تتغذّى منها وتبدع، شأنها شأن الميثولوجيا اليونانية والرومانية التي كان لها الأثر العميق في حضارة الغرب اللغوية والأدبية والاجتماعية. ونظن القارئ يدرك جيداً أن الغرب ما كان ليُغنى بالمثيولوجيا لولا علمه بخطورتها في تبين دقائق المعتقدات عند الأمم والشعوب، والوقوف منها على أصولها البعيدة الضائعة في ثنايا نفسيتها التي نشأت مع الأحقاب الطويلة من حياتها المديدة.
ورغم مرور ربع قرن تقريباً على الطبعة الأولى لهذا الكتاب، فهو لا يزال فريداً في المكتبة العربية، وإن بدأت تؤنس وحشته في الآونة الأخيرة بعض الجهود العلمية المفيدة.
