يعد نيلسون مانديلا واحدًا من أكثر الشخصيات التي حظيت بالاحترام والتقدير على مستوى العالم، ليس فقط لكونه قاد كفاح مواطنيه السود لإلغاء نظام الفصل العنصري الذي طبق بمنتهى القسوة في جنوب إفريقيا وتسبب ذلك في سجنه لمدة 27 عامًا، رفض خلالها أن يقايض حريته بمبادئه التي آمن بها، ولكن لكونه استطاع أن يقود بلاده نحو التحول لدولة ديمقراطية متعددة الأعراق، وفي سبيل إنجاح هذا التحول دفع بكل جهده نحو عملية مصالحة اعتبرت الأنجح على مستوى العالم، ونموذجًا يحتذى به عند الحديث عن تجارب التحول الديمقراطي، الأمر الذي أسهم بعد ذلك في جعل بلاده تتربع على عرش القارة اقتصاديًا طبقًا للتقديرات الدولية.
وخلال فترة رئاسته واجه مانديلا أزمة طاحنة عندما تولى مانديلا الرئاسة عام 1994، واشتد عليه الضغط الشعبي ليحاسب كل من ظلم واستبد وارتكب جرائم ضد المواطنين السود الأبرياء، لكنه استطاع عبور الأزمة وحسم الأمر تمامًا عن طريق تكوين ما سمي بلجنة الحقيقة والمصالحة، وتقوم فكرتها على اعتراف رجال السلطة بجرائمهم مقابل طلب العفو عنهم، وقد وضع بالاشتراك مع القس ديزموند توتو مواطنيه أمام خيارين إما التعلق بالماضي أو النظر للمستقبل، وقد فضل مانديلا المصارحة والمصالحة على المحاكمات والمصادرات والمصادمات الدامية، وكانت اللجنة عبارة عن هيئة لاستعادة العدالة وبموجبها فإن الشهود الذين كانوا ضحايا لانتهاكات سافرة لحقوق الإنسان تمت دعوتهم للإدلاء بشهادتهم واختير بعضهم لجلسات عامة، وفي نفس الوقت فإن مرتكبي أعمال العنف كان بإمكانهم طلب العفو من الملاحقة الجنائية والمدنية، وكان من سلطات اللجنة منح هذا العفو.
وكذلك منح التعويضات للضحايا وورثتهم، وبدلًا من تقديم مرتكبي هذه الانتهاكات للمحاكم اعتمدت اللجنة جلبهم للاعتراف بأخطائهم وطلب الصفح من الضحايا؛ حيث حقق عمل اللجنة نجاحًا واسعًا، دفع مانديلا لمطالبة ثوار مصر وتونس باتباع نهج بلاده فيما يخص المصالحة، قائلًا أنهم لو كانوا تفرغوا للماضي لما كانت قصة جنوب إفريقيا واحدة من أروع قصص النجاح الإنساني.
