عندما وقف الشرجي، مصنف الكتاب، على كتب التاريخ التي عنيت بتراجم الصوفية ككتاب "الرسالة" للقشيري و"طبقات الصوفية" للسلمي وغيرهما، وجدها أهملت ذكر أهل اليمن، فلم ير أحداً منهم تعرض لذكر أحد من أهل اليمن من السادة الصوفية الصادقين والعلماء العاملين الزاهدين، ومن ثم أراد المؤلف أن يتمم هذا النقص في كتب التاريخ فألف "طبقات الخواص" الذي أتى مخصصاً في مناقب الصوفية من أهل اليمن دون غيرهم، على أنه شمل كثيراً م تراجم رجال العلم في هذا القطر الذي لا صلة لهم بما يعرف بعلم التصوف كالعلامة المحدث إبراهيم بن عمر العلوي، ومحمد بن إسماعيل بن أبي الصيب، والفقيه يحيى بن أبي الخير العمراني. وقد سار في تبويبه على الترتيب الأبجدي ولم يحصره في تراجم أهل عصر دون عصر إلا أنه أغفل ذكر معاصريه الذين لم يدرك وفياتهم.
