تراكمت القصص والأساطير الإيرانية وتزايدت ومرت عليها القرون إلى ان تكاملت وانتظمت وصارت معدة للتدوين ، بدأ هذا قبل الإسلام، في عهد الدولة الساسانية، حين دونت الأفستا وغيرها من الكتب الدينية والحماسية بما تحتوي عليه من أساطير القوم.
وقد اخترت لهذا الكتاب أربع أساطير من أشهر أساطيرهم، ورتبتها في ترتيبها المعمول به في الكتب التى جمعت أساطير الفرس ، وهى الضحاك وزال والعنقاء ورستم والخطوب السبعة والإسكندر ، وأخيرا هذه بعض الأساطير التى انتشرت بين الفرس وجاءت في كتبهم ونقلها عنهم المؤرخون والكتاب المسلمون وغيرهم أقدمها للقارئ العربي مقدما لها ومفسرا لبعض نقاطها وأرجو ان تنال إعجابه وان توجهه إلى قراءة المزيد منها في مصادرها الأصلية كالشاهنامة وكتاب غرر ملوك الفرس وغيرهما للإطلاع على تراث رائع لأمة قدمت الكثير من ادبها وفنونها للعالم وقدمت أساطيرها أيضا.
