هدفي في هذا البحث هو استكشاف بعض السبل التي ظهر فيها هذا التمثيل الجديد للمجتمع المصري، وكذلك بعض التحولات الاجتماعية والثقافية الأوسع التي كان جزءًا منها وساعد بدوره على توليدها ومثل هذا الاستكشاف كما أراه إنما يتطلب نهجًا جد مختلف عن النهج الذي يصوغ الحكايات الرائجة عن التاريخ العمالي المصري، فهذه الحكايات تميل إلى تصوير انبثاق هذا التمثيل "الطبقي" الجديد بوصفه المحلة المباشرة والضرورية إلى هذا الحد أو ذاك لتغير اقتصادي بنيوي والحكاية التي تحكيها تمشي على نحو كهذا النحو. منذ أواسط تسعينيات القرن التاسع عشر فصاعدًا أدى توسع لاستثمار رأس المال من جانب الأجانب إلى إنشاء مشروعات استثمارية في مصر وإلى تشغيل عدد متزايد من العمال بالأجر الذين لا يملكون شيئًا في مشروعات كبيرة وحديثة نسبيًا بعبارة أخرى إلى خلق طبقة عاملة مصرية وقد اكتسبت تلك الطبقة الجديدة تدريجيًا وعيًا بذاتها من خلال تجربتها، ومقارنتها للاستغلال وللاضطهاد في مواقع العمل وفي نهاية المطاف أوحت تلك المقارنة (الإضرابات وتكوين النقابات إلخ) لبقية المجتمع المصري بوجود الطبقة العاملة مواقع اجتماعي وكفاعل اقتصادي واجتماعي مهم.
