الكتاب هو مقدمة وضعها ابن حجر العسقلاني لمؤلفه الذي شرح فيه صحيح الإمام البخاري والذي سماه "فتح الباري في شرح صحيح الإمام البخاري" وفي هذه المقدمة يبين ابن حجر قواعد وفرائد صحيح الإمام البخاري، وانحصر القول هذا في عشرة فصول، الأول: في بيان السبب الباحث له على تصنيف هذا الكتاب: الثاني: في بيان موضوعه والكشف عن مغزاه فيه، والكلام على تحقيق شروطه، وتقرير كونه من أصح الكتب المصنفة في الحديث النبوي، الثالث: في بيان الحكمة في تقطيعه للحديث واختصاره، وفائدة إعادته للحديث وتكراره، الرابع: في بيان السبب في إيراده الأحاديث المعلقة، والآثار الموقوفة. الخامس: في ضبط الغريب الواقع في متونه مرتباً له على حروف المعجم، السادس: في ضبط الأسماء المشكلة التي فيه وكذا الكنى والأنساب، السابع: في تعريف شيوخه الذين أهل نسبهم، الثامن: في سياق الأحاديث التي انتقدها عليه الإمام الدارقطني وغيره من النقاد، التاسع: في سياق أسماء جميع من طعن فيه من رجاله على ترتيب الحروف، والجواب عن ذلك الطعن بطريق الأنصاف والعدل، العاشر: في سياق فهرسه صحيح الإمام البخاري، باباً باباً وعدة ما في كل باب من الحديث. ثم ختم هذه المقدمة بترجمة كاشفة عن خصائصه ومناقبه، جامعة لمآثره ومناقبه.
