إنّ الكثير من المؤلفات النحوية القديمة انطلقت في دراسة النحو من منطلق دراسة المفردة، ومن المعلوم أن المفردة لا تكتسب أهميتها، ولا يتضح معناها المعجمي والوظيفي والدلالي إلا من خلال سياق الجملة، أو ما يسمى بالعلاقات السياقية داخل التركيب.
ولقد انتقدت بعض البحوث الحديثة على نحاتنا الأوائل أنهم لم يعطوا دراسة الجملة نصيبها الكافي من البحث والتحليل، أو دراستها دراسة تكشف عن مفهومها الدقيق، وأقسامها، وأحوالها، ودلالتها.
فمن هنا توالت الدراسات اللغوية الحديثة في الجملة، وكثرت الأبحاث فيها، وتضاربت الآراء في مفهومها، وأقسامها، وإعرابها، وأحوالها، محاولين الوصول إلى درس نحوي تكون الجملة منطلقه الأساس، أو تكون الجملة جسر عبور إلى (نحو النص).
