الرواية أحداثها مستوحاة من واقع حياة الريف في جنوب العراق حيث تنتشر المسطحات المائية العذبة، المسماة بـ"الأهوار" أو " المياه البهية"، وتتوافر الخيرات، مما أدى لتزاحم العشائر العربية في المنطقة، وأقام شيوخ العشائر والميسورون منهم مضائف كبيرة من القصب المتوفر في هذه البيئة المائية، يقدمون فيها الطعام والمنام للضيوف، كما تعتبر بمثابة بيوت ثقافية واجتماعية يقضون فيها الأمسيات في مناقشة أمور العشيرة الحياتية والمعاشية، وهناك الرواة الذين يقصون النوادر الحكايات.
ولحاجة الناس للعدالة في الفصل بين الناس في الخلافات ؛ برز في هذه المضائف "الفريضة" أو القاضي، وهو رجل وقور يملك من العقل الحكمة والروية ما يجعله موضع احترام وتقدير الجميع، أمره مطاع وكلمته مسموعة ومكانه بجانب شيخ العشيرة ومستشاره وأنيسه... وفريضتنا في هذه الرواية اسمه "عريب العُربة" الرجل الحكيم، ومستشار الشيخ "مزعل" شيخ العشيرة الذي يحب ويقدِّر زوجته وابنة عمه "سعدة"، لكنها عاقر والمشيخة بحاجة الى ولي العهد... وهنا تبدأ سلسلة من الأحداث بسبب قرارات صائبة وأخرى خاطئة.
